TOP SUMMER HAIR CARE TIPS FOR YOU!

Summer is here and with seasonal changes come the damaging effects that can negatively impact the health or our hair. It’s easy to forget to care for our hair properly when  we’re having fun at the beach, or at a festival, eventhough summer hair care is an essential part of the hottest months. Our hair is probably the most damageable during the summer, with UV-rays, chlorine and salt water among the most harmful effects. Do you know how to keep your scalp and hair healthy in the heat? Here’s what to look out for so that your locks will stay hydrated, shiny and healthy all through the summer months.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR HAIR IN THE HOTTEST MONTHS?

Beaming sun rays, salty sea water or chlorinated pool water all put extreme stress on our hair. They can make your hair difficult to comb, dull and dry. Dust and wind can make the hair rough to the touch, while harmful UV-rays and air conditioning are harmful not only for the skin, but also for the hair and scalp. Air conditioning has a very drying effect on our skin – including the scalp!

In addition, nutrient deficiencies, unhealthy hairstyles, and chemical-based products can also cause problems in the summer, damaging not only the hair, but also the scalp. The outer layer of the hair is harmed, which loses elasticity, becomes severely dry and can even start to fall out. To avoid this, it’s essential that summer hair care becomes part of your daily routine in the hotter months ahead.

SUMMER HAIR CARE - HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR from damage?

1) PROTECT YOUR HAIR AND SCALP FROM THE SUN, DUST, CHLORINE OR SALT WATER!

Campaigns about harmful UV-rays are mostly about protecting your skin, but protecting your hair should also be a priority. It’s worth wetting your hair with clean water before it comes into contact with seawater or chlorine, so you have an ‘extra layer’ of protection against unhealthy effects! A nourishing oil or a leave-in conditioner can be just as effective. Of course, the best external protection from the sun and dust is to wear a straw hat, baseball cap or bandana over your head.
Headgear provides protection not only for the hair follicles but also for the scalp.

However, make sure that the headgear you choose lets air flow through, otherwise it will be unbearable to wear in the summer heat. Furthermore, care must be taken to ensure moderation, i.e. that the amount of time spent in the sun is kept to a minimum.

Chloric acid, which is responsible for the purity of pool water, damages our hair’s sebum layer, which is responsible for its protection. As salt water evaporates, salt crystallises on the hair strands, heated by the sun, causing further damage to the structure of the hair.

A thorough rinse will prevent your hair from becoming dry and from split ends as well. Don’t forget to moisturise afterwards! Choose a nourishing shampoo and mask that suits your hair and skin type. After rinsing your hair, gently cleanse with a deep-hydrating shampoo to remove any remaining chemicals and restore moisture. During the summer, you may also want to use a nourishing hair mask at least once a week.

2) VITAMINS, MINERALS and hydration ARE ESSENTIAL for THE PERFECT SUMMER HAIR CARE ROUTINE!

Before going on holiday, nipping down to the beach or attending a festival, it’s a good idea to use deeply nourishing cosmetics for a hydrated and glowing effect. However, let your scalp breathe, don’t clog it with chemical-rich shampoos and conditioners, opt for natural cosmetics instead. Chemical-free conditioners, shampoos and conditioners help to revive and moisturise hair thanks to the natural ingredients and vitamins they contain. They form a protective layer around the hair in order to protect against damage and moisture-loss. They also strengthen hair follicles and help prevent breakage, while softening and moisturising. This keeps your hair healthy, hydrated and shiny.

It’s best to avoid high heat styling, such as a flat-iron and excessive blow drying, which can dry out and severely damage the hair strands, quickly leaving them lifeless and unmanageable. Before going to the beach, you should try to avoid styling products such as hairspray or mousse, as these can burn into the hair in the heat.

3) SUMMER HAIR CARE + A PROTECTIVE HAIRSTYLE = HEALTHY HAIR

Part of summer hair care is being protective and gentle when it comes to styling your hair. As mentioned above, it’s advisable to avoid excessive  heat styling and and choosing hairstyles that require minimal manipulation.

In the summer months, we all tend to prefer simple styles and natural textures – such as beach waves, or loose braids. They are timeless styles and easy to manage.

We’ve brought you some low-maintenance, heat-free hairstyles for this summer!

low bun

The low-sitting bun is an absolute classic. Because the bun sits neatly on the back of your head, gravity doesn’t pull on your roots. If you feel like it, you can take this hairstyle to the next level by using a headband or a pretty hair tie.

MESSY BUN

Sometimes we all want our hair out of our face, especially in the summer heat. A high, tight ponytail can cause damage to the hair, a high, lazy bun is a much better choice. In this case, don’t worry about precision, the messier, the better!

BRAIDS

There are endless variations of the braided hairstyle. If you want something more extreme, go for a braid. You can even combine it with the low- or messy bun. Spare your roots and make sure the braid is not too tight!

4) EAT HEALTHY AND EXERCISE REGULARLY!

The health, strength and elasticity of your hair depends on nutrients. Eat foods rich in minerals and vitamins to protect your hair and scalp! The most important of these are vitamins A, B, C and E. The best natural sources of vitamin A are liver, dairy and fish. Nuts, rice, cauliflower and various legumes are rich in vitamin B. The best natural sources of vitamin C are peppers, kiwi fruit, citrus fruits and broccoli, vitamin E is found in olives, seeds and wheat.

Exercise, run, cycle or hike in the cool woods and you’ll get a perfect figure and a beautiful head of hair!

+SUMMER HAIR CARE TIPS FOR COLOURED HAIR

Unfortunately, if you have coloured hair, summer heat can cause even more damage than for those with natural hair colour – dyed hair dries out more easily in the summer season, and then becomes brittle and unmanageable.

If you can, avoid dyeing your hair directly before sun exposure, as this can cause more damage to your hair. Chemicals react with UV aggressively on the hair and scalp. Blond hair can be particularly sensitive.

+SUMMER HAIR CARE TIPS IN CASE OF SCALP PROBLEMS

The harmful factors already mentioned, as well as a low humidity environment, can cause severely dry scalp, which can increase the symptoms of itchy scalp in the warmer months. For others, the heat has the opposite effect and their scalp becomes oily. When setting up your summer hair care routine, it’s important to consider the condition of your scalp.

Humidity allows sweat to evaporate less efficiently, and sweat can trap bacteria, excess oil and dirt. These can quickly build up on the scalp and weaken the scalp’s outermost, natural protective layer.
This is also why dandruff can occur during the hot and humid season.

Healthy hair during the summer is very much dependent on the condition of the scalp. If you have reocurring, stubborn scalp problems or need help with your summer hair care regime, book an appointment with one of our professional hair specialists for a comprehensive scalp and hair diagnosis!
